TV Show Review: Cable Girls

I started seeing the ads on Netflix for Cable Girls months ago - I always think watching period pieces aren't for me and then I finally give in and I am always glad I did. This show is no different, once I figured out how to change the language setting (I've never had to previously

apparently, lol) I set off on a great adventure with this show. It is full of drama and they did a wonderful job keeping the early 1920's look and feel. There are rich people lying and stealing and sexism towards women and crime and abuse - it does make for a great show that gives you a better feel for how things happen back then.

Cable Girls is set in Madrid and seeing how things where there are similar to how things were here in the US. The main premise of the show is set around the invention of public telephone creation. It is about the operators and the people in charge and the people they love and/or are lovers with. They have lesbianism, a poly relationship, a transgender person, and disgusting treatment of said humans. Women were treated poorly - barely able to work (and in some cases not at all), abuse, overbearing parents, back alley abortions, brothels, and so much else. Women were less important than anything else in the world back then. At that point women couldn't ask for a divorce only men - and they called it an annulment.

The show is worth watching - if for no other reason than you learn a lot about how far we've come since then.

One of my favorite lines is from Dona Carmen Cifuentes - she says something along the lines of it taking a long time to get across town ever since those automobiles were invented - it just made me laugh.

The abuse is a bit triggering, so if it is something that will be hard to watch - then proceed with caution because it is prevalent though not the only focus. 

There are only 2 seasons so far but another one should be out in the spring as long as it follows how they did it last year. Netflix usually does 2 seasons a year with their originals.

Check it out and when you do, binge watch it - it is much more dramatic that way.

TV Review: Madam Secretary

I have been "binge watching" Madam Secretary the last few weeks (Ok mainly just on the weekends because being an adult with work and school is a time suck, lol.)

I love that they shine a new light on someone in politics. We get to see a made up home life of the Secretary of State.

 Tea Leoni and Time Daly are fantastic actors and really play their roles well. I have been watching Time Daly since his days on Wings (yes, I am old enough to have watched the first runs of this show.) I have always adored the brooding look on his face constantly which is interesting considering he is still extremely handsome despite the expression. Tea Leoni has the ability to really play any role handed to her with ease. She embodies everything a true actress needs: range, humor, uncommon beauty, style, and so many other many other attributes.

At the time and I believe they are still, Tea and Tim are a couple IRL which I believe shows in their performance. It is extremely hard to see that connection and admiration when it is two people who are lacking some sort of intimacy. It can and has been done, but it can be truly hard. 

Their kids on the show are smart, determined, and handle their parents busy lives well for the most part.

All of these characters were well laid out and play an important role in this show, they picked a perfect cast to showcase all of that.

I'm not usually one to be attracted to political based shows, but once I started watching it, I have been sucked in. 

It is hard for me to get completely into a show of any sort, I am usually working in my home office while I binge, so I really have to be into a show for it to keep my attention while I work. 

Take time and check this show out, you won't be sorry! Currently 3 seasons are on Netflix and season 4 starts on October 8th, 2017.
